Open channel, 2023
After having a reading session with a local psychic, I was caught in a trance state. To my bewilderment, and as I gazed at the clairvoyants third eye, I saw my readers vortex, aura, whatever you want to call it. It was clear and rippled around her like a small body of water, pooling in a circular motion. I left this reading feeling very affirmed in my spiritualism journey. The paintings and objects in the room were my response to this break through. Caught in a figurative haze, thinking of abstract spiritualists and artists—Hilma af Klint and Kandinsky—i rendered my interpretation of trance-like states as representations of the clairvoyant intervention: figures situated in a dissolving, liminal ether; blank faces with only eyes— capturing the physicality of Scrying- an intuitive act of where one gazes into the eyes of another in order to access their energy fields, and receive messages — absorbing the transmission.
The resin cast object, functioning as a participatory work, mimics an obsidian mirror—an amulet used to perform scrying. The bewitched object, with impressions of palms, rhymes with the physicality of the hollywood walk of fame. inviting viewers to place their hands upon the rock— touching palms with the negative impression of a creative savant, or a clairvoyant attempting to transfer their energy.
